Sue and Lou, a pair of Labrador retrievers in Kansas City, found themselves facing a challenge with their new electric fence. Their family was concerned as the dogs were fearful and hesitant to approach the boundary, which led to anxiety during outdoor playtime and walks. It was clear that some guidance was needed to help them adjust to this new setup, so we arrived ready to support their progress.

During our session, we focused on gradual exposure to the fence. We encouraged Sue and Lou to engage with the area near the boundary while rewarding them with treats and praise for calm behavior. They both made strides in gaining confidence, taking tentative steps toward the fence while looking to their family for reassurance. It was heartening to see them beginning to understand that the fence was not a threat.

A pivotal moment came when Lou took a few steps closer and plopped down, clearly more relaxed than when we started. Sue followed suit, and both dogs were able to enjoy some time lounging near the boundary without the previous signs of panic. Their family expressed relief, noting how the dogs seemed more at ease.

Moving forward, we’ll continue to build their comfort level around the fence. The plan is to reinforce their positive experiences as they interact with the area, making outdoor time more enjoyable and stress-free for everyone involved.
